The Vintage Bazaar Blog aims to provide information on the different events that we run
The first event of the year is on Saturday 3rd March 2012 and takes the form of a Textile Rag and Remnant Rummage. 20 stands will be piled high with textiles, trimmings, buttons, linens and anything related to sewing.
The event will take place in the Trull Village Memorial Hall, Church Road, Trull, Taunton Somerset. TA3 7JZ. Click here for details of opening times and further information.

Our next date is then Saturday 21st April 2012. If you click here you can get a flavour of the most recent Vintage Bazaar in Frome. The Fair will open at 9 am and close at 3 pm. Admission £1.

After that we are running a new venture in the Cheese and Grain in Frome. Click here for further information. The Giant Vintage Rag Market will take place on Saturday 30th June from 9 pm to 3 pm. Admission £1.

Following a short summer break, we will be holding our first Vintage Bazaar in Hampshire. The Fair is being held in the Victoria Halls in Hartley Wintney on Saturday September 22nd, there are some images here of the venue. More information to follow...

The Vintage Bazaar Hartley Wintney

Here is an update for The Vintage Bazaar's latest venture. The hall is now booked and we have been very busy taking bookings for the stalls for the fair at
The Victoria Rooms in Hartley Wintney (recently named Best Place to Live in the UK!!)

These photographs were taken last year at a fair in the building. I wanted to give you a peek of the beautiful interior.....

There is parking at the hall but should this become full there is a

pay and display parking is nearby http://g.co/maps/hhbwt which is signposted from Bracknell Lane. Turn rt into Hartford road and follow signs. The car park is next to the medical centre.

There is a pretty area of common land opposite the hall, and there are some gorgeous, characterful shops just along the road....

Including a pub (spotted by Jack it has to be said!) He feels that it is important to point out local watering holes.....

This beautiful shop (below) caught my eye. It is called The Limes......

Followed by a fab charity shop. Now this one is worth a visit girls! Amazing designer clothing..including Betty Barclay.Jaeger ..Aquascutum...etc. All at sensible prices.....

The Textile Rag and Remnant Rummage

Recently a lot of my friends have been asking why there are no textile events in Taunton? It is a busy town with an Arts College and plenty of keen makers and sewing enthusiasts...
Here at Vintage Bazaar HQ we are happy to announce The Textile Rag and Remnant Rummage! The date is set for Saturday 3rd March 2012 at The Trull Memorial Hall on the outskirts of Taunton. (here TA3 7JZ). There is ample car parking and level access for stall holders to unload. The focus will be on bargain prices on textiles, scraps, trimmings, remnants, buttons old and new. The Fair will open at 9.30 and end at 14.00. Admission 50p.

Yet another busy day at The Vintage Bazaar flew by last Saturday. We had over 1000 enthusiastic visitors through the door, and a lot of compliments about the high standard of the stands.

Thank you to all of the visitors, and thank you also to the fab stallholders who really made the day! Thank you also to the brilliant team who work in the Cheese and Grain. They all work so hard to ensure that we have a stress free and enjoyable day.

The weeks are flying by, and the 3rd Vintage Bazaar at the Cheese and Grain in Frome is only weeks away. The stall holders are sending in new images of their stock on a daily basis, so I will be adding to this post as new pictures arrive..... Above is a selection of Donna Flower's stock. These 2 images are from Fading Grace who keeps very busy sourcing beautiful items to sell at the many events that she attends.

The Vintage Bothy has been with the Vintage Bazaar from the start, and makes a huge effort to set out her stand with a totally different look for each event.

Auntie Loves Jazz (above) is joining us for the fair, doesn't her stock look great?

Moira is joining us this time with her colourful collection of Vintage children's books and toys.

Niki from Nostalgia at no. 1 will be bringing beautiful treasures to the fair. Her stand is always popular and buzzing with enthusiastic buyers waiting to purchase her latest creations.

The Giant Vintage Rag Market

at The Cheese and Grain in Frome. Saturday the 30^th June 2012. 9am to 3 pm.

This type of event has become increasingly popular over the past few years and now Clare and I would like to bring the concept of a Rag Market to Frome. We are planning to have 40 stalls piled high with vintage textile related goodies, from fragments of 18^th century silk waistcoats, Victorian shell buttons, Edwardian lace scraps, pre-war french workwear, 1940's patched pinnies, 1950's satin dresses in need of love and restoration, original 60's patent leather kinky boots to unfinished 1970's Laura Ashley patchwork quilts.

Items can be anything related to textiles, so please bring buttons, linens, trimmings, ribbons, lace, hats, costume, stockings, embroidery, shoes, magazines related to vintage fashion, but NOTHING later than 1980 please.

This is a datelined event giving those who trade, make or collect anything in the world of Textiles and Vintage Costume the opportunity to clear out their workshops, studios, sheds and cupboards.... we would advise that you keep your prices at a sensible level, single priced baskets (for example “everything 50p in this basket” usually works well in my experience).

More expensive items are of course welcomed, but the idea is to have each stall selling a selection of affordable bits and bobs to suit every purse.

For this event we are using a different layout for the stands. We would encourage you to sit behind your stalls at the fair in order to keep the aisles as wide as possible.

A plan of the stalls will be available soon on the Vintage Bazaar blog.

Stalls priced at £35 per table, only single stalls are available to create more variety and to give more sellers a chance to have a stand as this unusual event.

Stalls will be allocated on a first come, first served basis at the discretion of the organisers. Your stall cannot be assumed booked unless we have received your booking form AND post dated cheque. We appreciate that there are over 10 months to this event, but this is the required time to plan and advertise to maximum effect.

Admission will be charged to customers at £1 per adult to cover advertising costs. There will be NO early trade entry to this event.

A changing room is not provided as this Fair. So please take this into consideration when planning what you are bringing.

Many apologies for silence on this blog. I have been having HUGE problems signing in. Finally I have access permitted so can post some news about the next fair in Frome on Saturday October 29th. We are in the process of booking stallholders, and nearly everybody from the April fair has rebooked. We do have a long waiting list of interested people wanting to take a stand at our Fair. It is our intention to keep a good mix of stands at this event, and so would offer "like for like" should any of our stall holders cancel their stand. For example this means that if you sell Vintage Clothing, we can only accommodate you on one of the bigger "bay" stands. To this date all of these are booked.

The flyers have been ordered and I will be happy to distribute them once they arrive. I will be at the Vintage and Handmade Textile Fair on Saturday the 4th of June, and might have them with me by then!

This gorgeous abstract painting of bottles seems an appropriate pic to say a huge and frankly enormous THANK YOU, and CHEERS to all the fantastic stallholders and visitors to the Vintage Bazaar in Frome yesterday. The hall was full to the rafters once again with beautiful vintage items, sadly I didn't have my camera with me.. but I will be posting pix here as my friends send them to me! Thank you also to the "Darling Team" who worked so hard on the day (and for months and months before)...and to Michael for assisting on the desk for hours on end (that was really appreciated by Mr W) .....and to the fab team at The Cheese and Grain who were so helpful and hardworking on our behalf.

The Vintage Bazaar is just around the corner now! Clare and I have been working hard to spread the word about the fair. We are hoping that we shall have plenty of enthusiastic buyers to enjoy purchasing from the 35 different stalls. All our stall holders have been working hard to gather fresh new stock for the event so that (hopefully!) nobody will be disappointed. It is only just over a week until the Vintage Bazaar. We are looking forward to our second event in Frome. Here is taster of some of the stall holders who will be exhibiting at The Cheese and Grain on Saturday April the 30th 2011.

It has been a while since I have posted on this blog. but preparations have been going on behind the scenes for the next Vintage Bazaar at The Cheese and Grain in Frome. The date is set for Saturday April the 30th. Most of the stall holders from the first fair have rebooked. We have had a lot of enquiries for stalls and now have a long waiting list of over 30 names. I have been busy flyering the fair wherever I go, and have plenty of spares if anyone would like some. I am happy to post them, or you can collect some from me at any of the events listed in the previous post.

It is just over a week since the first Vintage Bazaar in the Cheese and Grain in Frome. We have had a lot of feedback from the event AND a lot of enquiries for stands at the next fair in April. I am now in the process of confirming which of the stall holders would like to join us for the fair next time. Once I have this list I will be able to contact anybody on the waiting list should there be spaces to fill.

Saturday saw us sitting in the van outside the Cheese and Grain in Frome with a flask of coffee at 6.30 am, these guys were sound asleep in their tour bus next to us. I would have loved to have seen them play the evening before, but I think a late night bopping away to a reggae band might not have helped us cope with the organisation of the long awaited Vintage Bazaar......

Once we had got into the building and allocated the stalls, we opened the doors to the enthusiastic stall holders. I played a few lively White Mink tracks to get the atmosphere going.. we had a few problems with setting up the music, but a combination of my sons stereo and Mike's much more modern ipod arrangement we soon had things organised and swinging.

Soon the stalls were in place and the doors opened on the dot of 9 to allow the first wave of customers into the building. These are a small sample of the stalls on offer.

What I don't have are the images of the rails of fabulous clothing from the 1900's up until the 1960's. It wasn't a date lined event, but we wanted the clothing to be Antique and Vintage, and boy did the stall holders provide an amazing selection.... there were silk dressing gowns, 30's lame jackets, soft velvet 40's evening cloaks, faux fur 40's jackets (my mum snaffled that one!) and much, much more.

Of course Clare and I need to say a lot of Thank You's for the combined efforts and energies that made for a buzzing and spectacular day.

The team at the Cheese and Grain provide an excellent service, and were happy to accommodate every request. Nothing was any trouble. The tables were put in position after the band finished the previous evening at 2am, lighting arranged and lots of useful advice provided as we set up.

Of course we couldn't have done it without Mr W and Mr Darling, and Clare's mum........ and all the friends who have supported us and assisted with spreading the word about the Bazaar. Edwin was a star on the desk for a few hours, helping out with the hustle and bustle of customers thronging into the building... a mere 1145 of them. The crew in the cafe were busy all day, and apparently sent out for more litres of milk - twice!

This was one of the most unusual and original stalls on the day, Debbie's amazing Gardenalia stand. This was Debbie's first ever fair and she certainly put on a spectacular show, next stop The Country Living Fair?

This weekend I have been busy making lists and preparing for the Fair. The action is taking place at the Cheese and Grain in Frome. The doors open for customers at 9am and the fair closes at 3pm. There have been a few last minute changes to the stall holders, but I am hoping that there will be no more cancellations now as I have a very busy week! Several stallholders have been doing "mock-up" stalls over the weekend. Tracy has been hard at work perfecting the layout on her stall.... Sarah D has been busy too, hers is the picture at the top of the page.

I have been putting together 2 rails of my very best 40's dresses, 50's duster coats and some divine vintage lambswool and cashmere knitwear. The postcard (above) is part of a collection of ephemera that I have earmarked for the fair. Mr W. is taking along some Eastern European mangle cloths, and some of his best selling French cockle baskets (if we can squeeze them in the van!)

Clare has some stunning new designs which I am looking forward to seeing, and Niki has been putting together some delicious treasures to bring to the fair.

Clare has been busy again! This time she has managed to get the Vintage Bazaar into Homes & Gardens magazine. There are some super articles in this months mag, the one that caught my eye was the feature about the craft room. It seems we all hanker after that special place where we can work on projects away from the distractions.

Only 2 more weeks until the Vintage Bazaar at the Cheese and Grain in Frome. I have had a few queries and questions about the setting up time. Clare and I will be in at 7am to ensure everything is correct with the layout. We will then let the stall holders in at 7.30. I have been asked again about early trade entry, there cannot be any. It is not fair on stall holders to have people perusing their stock when they are trying to set up. Nor is it fair on the customers standing outside in the queue (she adds optimistically) if they think other people have already been in "and bought all the best bits". Sorry to be firm on this, but as we are opening at 9am it is far better to call that "early entry" for everyone.

Also, I have had questions about the sketch plan that I previously posted. The loading doors at the side do not go through the middle of the stalls, I just wanted to indicate that there were several along each side of the building. On the days we have viewed the Cheese and Grain there have been stalls already set up which has made it hard to do a detailed drawing of the room.

Don't forget my earlier advice about lighting, especially at the sides. There are sockets, but do bring lots of extension cables in case you are not next to a socket.

There are doors along the sides of the hall which you can unload through. This is NOT to scale, in reality there is more space between the rows/stalls. Flyers, Flyers everywhere!

I have had a bit of a stressful time lately. After ordering 1500 flyers back in the spring for the Vintage bazaar, I tried to order more at the end of August (plenty of time, or so I thought!)

To cut a long and rather tedious story short.. 1500 flyers arrived the first week in September with a great image of the French shop interior on the front and absolutely NOTHING on the reverse....I have been fighting ever since to get this order replaced, and finally yesterday 3000 flyers arrived! Not a gesture of goodwill, just total incompetence! So, if anyone needs more flyers I can easily post them.. or hand them to you at any of the fairs in the next few weeks. I will be at Chagford Rag fair this coming Saturday, the 2nd October. Mr Jack will be at the

Stroud Vintage fair the same day (and will have a pile of flyers with him to hand out). I will then be at Honiton on Tuesday the 5th October, followed by Newark on Thursday and Friday. Totnes is my destination on Saturday the 9th for the Nostalgic Mix fair and then Shepton Flea on Sunday the 10th. See you somewhere!

The Vintage Bazaar advertsing campaign is in full swing now. This months Sew Hip magazine have given us a great write-up with the title "An Antique Extravaganza" (I like it)
Of course the article goes on to mention the talented makers and the make-over ladies.

Well, Autumn is fast approaching and with it comes the Vintage Bazaar. I have been over to

The Cheese and Grain today to have another look at the space and make sure we have enough room for BBC Homes and Antiques and the lovely makeover girls that Clare met at the Lindy Hop event in Bath. There a few extra bits of advice for stallholders that I would like to impart:

The hall has blackout curtains so there is a chance it will be quite dark in there on the day, please bring lamps and cables especially if you are in the side stalls as this is the darkest space. All electrical equipment must be safety checked.

The stands in the centre come with one table, but there should be space to add in smaller card tables, so do bring an extra small table or bookcase if you feel you need it. Anybody who has ever been to or done the Textile Fair in Ilminster knows the merits of "building up" to make the best use of space! For those of you wanting to bring a rail of clothes in the centre stands, it will be possible. We intend to place such stall holders near the changing area and away from stands selling china! (we all know the danger of a runaway rail!!)

All tables should be covered with cloths that reach to the floor.

PLEASE - No "one price rails", this is a quality fair and this sort of rail makes an event look cheap. This is a vintage event, so all clothing on the rails should be at least pre 1990.

There will be no early entry for trade buyers. Everyone can come in together at 9 am when the fair opens.

I have spoken to the lovely Lotty who runs the cafe within the Cheese and Grain, she offers fairtrade tea and coffee at reduced rates for stallholders. There is a delicious looking menu, including a big breakfast for 4.50.

Recently Clare met some talented ladies at the Bath Lindy Hop. They were offering 1940's makeovers at £5 a go. I have seen a photo of one lady and the effect was stunning. Luckily they are free on October 30th so we have asked them to come along to The Vintage Bazaar.

I am hoping to procure a photo, but in the meantime you can have a smile at my mannequin Flossie who had a similar-ish makeover a while ago.

The Postcard Flyers have arrived!

Just to let everyone know that I took delivery of the postcard flyers for the fair this morning. Please let me know if and when you would like some to start distributing to friends and potential customers. Where possible it would be good to collect them from me at fairs to save on postage costs (which our local post lady has told me are about to increase again!)

I will be at the Frome Retro Fair this weekend, so will have some with me there.

A Vintage Bazaar.....something a little different?

Thank you to everyone who has commented on the ideas for the flyers for the fair. Clare and I need to get our heads together at the weekend to decide on what we want on the postcards. However, today I chanced upon this picture as a possible image for the fair? Although the fair will not be French.. or looking like a Parisian Departmental store. Somehow I feel the spirit of what we are doing is reflected in this..... it is also a fantastic eye catching image which is of course, what is needed!

I am now in the process of ordering flyers, so please let me know if you would like some to start distributing to friends & customers . The fair will be held on Saturday October 30th, opening at 9am and finishing at 3pm. Admission is £1. There is a cafe within the building and ample parking for stall holders and customers (pay and display). The nearby centre of town boasts some fantastic shops and the wonderful St Catherine's Hill which has a great atmosphere and fab selection of interesting shops.

I love this dresser. Clare designed this one, but I need to check if the image has to be "landscape" rather than "portrait".....

I am constantly adding the stall holders details to the sidebar on the blog, please send me an image of what you would like shown once you have booked your stall.

On that subject, I am still waiting for payment & confirmation from a few people. Please could you try to get this to me by the end of the month, as I am still getting enquiries for stalls (and having to put people on the waiting list...)

I woke up this morning to 50 email enquiries regarding stalls at the fair! Thank you to everybody who has been in touch, and been patient when the booking form didn't open. (I even did a trial run and sent it to myself to check it was OK!) Anyway, hopefully everyone who has requested a form now has one, as it stands the fair is full if everybody who has requested a booking form sends it back. I am happy to make a note of anyone who wishes to go on the waiting list, as I know from experience this might come in handy.

A rough guide to the floor plan

Here is a rough guide to the layout of stalls at the Cheese & Grain. It is most definitely not to scale as there is lots of walkway space in reality, and plenty of room for the stall holders to sit behind their stalls in the central blocks.

There are 3 types of stall available

(A) single 6 foot table top stall, with plenty of space to sit behind. cost £30

These run in rows down the centre of the hall

(B) End of row stalls with x2 6 foot tables provided £40

We understand that there are side doors for loading, but they were covered by curtains today. The photo is just to give an idea of the space!

Just to update you on the news...

Clare and I met up today and have drawn up a floor plan for the fair, checked out the catering arrangements (there is a great little cafe at one end of the hall) and drawn up a booking form. Please leave a comment and I will send out booking forms via email. Before you send it, please look at the floor plan so you can see which type of stalls are available. This should be posted on the blog in the next 24 hours.

The fair will open at 9 am, this is to maximise the Saturday morning trade in the town. The hall will be open from 7.30 for setting up, and we will assist with carrying in as much as we can as we do appreciate that 1.5 hours is a relatively short time.

There are power points throughout the hall, so you will be able to bring lighting, but PLEASE ensure all equipment is safe & would pass muster with an electrician!

Parking is outside the venue and at present costs £3.20 for the full day.

Due to the fact that the venue is often used for evening functions we will close the fair at 3pm. This will allow stall holders time to pack up and vacate the hall in good time, and also means that those who have to travel a fair distance can do some in some daylight!

We will be printing postcard style flyers for the event, and will be happy to send these out so that you can invite friends, customers and anyone you think might be interested..... the more the merrier and we all rely on "networking" to make events go well.

After much debate we have decided to make a small charge for admission. I know this a common bone of contention amongst people, but we feel that the balance of reasonable stall costs against small admission fee is a fair deal for everyone.
